Shopping for chairs?

February 26, 2013

Then may I recommend the junk-shop-slash-salvage-yard, and local institution, Aladdin’s Cave? It’s the most extraordinary place, where the ever-expanding stock is increasingly displayed on the ceiling above your head.

Aladdin's cave Lewisham

Health and safety, anyone? And it’s not just chairs. It’s fireplaces and wardrobes and Victorian garden edging and sinks. There’s even a front bit with nice light fittings where the indomitable women who run it always have a fire going, even in July. One of them delivered a sideboard to my house and wrestled it from van to living room while I dithered on the sidelines. Amazing. It’s a real Lewisham landmark. Have you been?

yes! it’s amazing. We bought an old radio cabinet from here for £40 and it’s now our TV stand. The only thing that annoyed me was that the lady (i think who runs it) gave me a price for a table, but then once she saw how enamoured I was with it, doubled the price!
I didn’t buy the table – probably my fault for not being poker-faced enough…

Nevertheless, I hope H&S never ever come round as it would be a huge shame if this ever closed down.

Oh Tanya, I’ve had that happen to me, with my deco bathroom mirror, in a place in Ladywell. And when buying a house, now I come to think of it. Gotta practice that poker face x

Lived here for 10 years but have no idea where it is! Can you please share the address?

It’s on Loampit Vale on the left hand side as you descend the hill towards Lewisham. Pretty much opposite Tyrwhitt Road. Enjoy!

It’s pleasingly mad isn’t it? Never bought anything as I find it a bit overwhelming (plus my flat is already full of stuff) but it’s great fun for a rummage. They had a load of bedroom furniture from the Savoy when it was being done up.
