The forgotten room

October 22, 2012

Real Reveal time. There’s a reason I rarely photograph more than two rooms in this house, and here it is.

What a a mess. That’s our attic spare bedroom. Complete with paper shredder thank you Mr MFH. When we moved in, we went as far as removing the carpet and putting tongue and groove panelling on the walls. A massive obsession at the time, I vaguely recall. The room gets tidied when people come to stay, but otherwise it’s a forgotten land of old toys, books and other strange hoardings. Kind of like a big version of ‘the drawer’ my parents used to hide in their kitchen.

Soooo. I’m mood boarding up a plan of action, to include…

1. Some built-in cupboards in the nook behind where the desk currently is (moving the desk). So we can remove the ugly shelves. Something like above left (picture fromĀ Yatzer), hiding books inside and planking pretty things on top.

2. Putting some nice lighting in. Honestly, probably not as nice as this.

3. Going wild with herringbones, plaids and checks for rugs, cushions and blankets.

I still need to do a mood board for the cupboard fronts, but it’s the start of a winter project.

Anyone else feeling the need to change everything in their home? I worry this is the tip of the iceberg.

one thing I’ve learned is that touching one thing often results in my spending the next 3-4 days moving all sorts of things in other rooms and engaging in a lot of extra work that I hadn’t planned on doing… its a cascade effect I’ve noticed. If you have a discrete room like this its probably safe but if you touch a big ” great room space” of kitchen, dining and living and have a lot of artefacts, pictures and other decorative pieces it can be exhausting – you get new pillows for the sofa and something else looks “off” and then lots of things need moving…

Yup can of worms, it always happens here too. I’m anticipating a few runs to the chazza shop.
