London’s High Line

July 4, 2012

Exciting times lie ahead in London if web-chat is correct. We could be acquiring our very own version of New York’s High Line -  a disused railway-turned-sky-park that we mentioned here  before.

The Limehouse Curve – how we feeling about that name? – is a 120m long Victorian viaduct stretching across Commercial Road in Tower Hamlets. It was last in service in the 60’s. Here it is today…

And here’s how What if: projects is reimagining it…

Lets do this London!

You can read more about it on Spacehive, which is an inspired online forum aimed at anyone looking to raise funds for neighbourhood improvement projects.

Meantime lets take in the actual High Line…

And Promenade Plantee in Paris, another revamped railway I snapped a few years ago…

Looks great. It’s about time things like this were done with urban disused railways. GG

I love the High Line, it’s fantastic. Last time I was in NY I said ‘London needs one of these.’ So hoorah – but can we have one in south London too?!

My thoughts exactly TNMA. I think we should look for sites and then concoct something for Spacehive…

on my last trip to NY i walked the high lIne – it is such a good use of redundant space – and was great to view the city from a height….. especially in built up areas like London and more people living in small spaces anywhere green is welcome

That is VERY exciting indeed! I must admit, when i see these disused lines from the train window, I always like how the greenery has sprung up of its own accord, not hard to imagine how great they would look! Can’t wait to see what happens.
