Keeping it Rhyl

August 23, 2011

Loving this, a concept for rebranding the Welsh seaside town of Rhyl produced by Proud Creative, at the invitation of Icon Magazine.

The design studio took references for shape and colour from postcards of the town’s heyday and its position on the map to create a simple portfolio of prints to feature on leaflets, buildings and even this chilled snack vending vehicle (ice cream van).

The full story can be found here, complete with more details on the wonderful reference points the designers drew on. These postcards were used to inspire the colour scheme, while the leisure centre/monorail mash-up below is just… inspiring.

I did a bit of research on Rhyl’s monorail, and it was well worth it. The indoor one at the Sun Centre above is Rhyl’s second monorail. The other one ran along the seafront. It opened in 1980 and stayed open for just six weeks, leaving its owners with huge debts. But what a six weeks. Behold.
